What is the difference between a male and a female Springer?
Which one best suits my family? A very good question to ask.
If you plan to neuter your family house dog, then there really is very little difference between a male and a female. However there ARE subtle differences between the sexes. These differences are much easier to understand if you live with both a male and a female springer.
MALE SPRINGERS:
Are typically more people oriented. They are more emotionally dependent on people. There isn't an independent bone in their body. They live for you. They are not complete without you. When in your presence they are happiest when one small part of their body is touching you. Imagine the classical painting of the man, his dog and a fireplace roaring in winter..... Where is the dog? Lying right at the man's feet. You could never shut the bathroom door on a male springer without breaking his heart. Until the day he dies he will get up and follow you from room to room. If your regular routine is to get up from watching TV and walk into the kitchen for a snack or a drink, that Male springer will follow you every time.
FEMALE SPRINGERS:
Are certainly more independent. They are unlikely to follow you to the bathroom. They are unlikely to follow you from room to room. They are more likely to find the best seat in the house and jump up there and watch (with one eye open) the events around them. They will favor one soft comfortable chair until you rattle the car keys or pick up your purse! Then they will be right at your feet ready to go. Most springers love to ride in the car but all springers hate to be left alone. It is always best to have two springers living together or at least a second dog.
BOTH MALE AND FEMALE SPRINGERS ARE LOVING, ATTENTIVE AND WANT TO BE LAP DOGS THEIR ENTIRE LIVES. Some females can demonstrate that "velcro personality" I described in males, but it is less likely and you will always get that co-dependent neediness from a typical male springer.
